Clark Fork / St Regis Rivers
9/17 - 9/19/2007
Following Estvold gathering at Chelan stayed at Nugget RV Park, St Regis, Mt enroute to Montana tour. Fished the St Regis River for a while with no action on October Caddis. Parked behind motel in town and walked down the St Regis to the mouth at the Clark Fork and fished the Clark Fork with small streamers. One nice 12" Cutthroat, lost one larger, got 3 more right at mouth of the Clark Fork.
On the 19th we moved to Slowy Campground (NFS) just east of St Regis. Fished Clark Fork there in the afternoon with 2 10-12" Cutthroat nymphing #12 shrimp.
9/14 - 9/19/2010
9/14 Float on Yellowstone River with Dave Payne. Mallard\'s Rest to 9th Street Bridge, about 14 miles. 1000-1700. Fished mostly #8 hopper with either a nymph or another smaller hopper, or a cinnamon ant. Lots of rises, hooked a few. Beautiful day. River low and braided below KOA, had to push drift boat a few times. In some of the runs it would have been too low for pontoon. Nice sunny day with little wind. Thunderstorm with a little rain just as we got to the takout.
9/15 Floated in pontoon from Mallard's Rest FAS to KOA, about 3.5 miles. 1300-1600. Fished hoppers again, about same luck as yesterday. Very nice river for pontoon.
Susan found two quilt shops in Livingston and bought some nice fabric.
9/16 Floated from Loch Leven to KOA. About 6.5 miles. 1100-1600. Fished hoppers again with same results. Still plenty of looks but few hook-ups. Went to 4X Flourocarbon tippet but fish still looked or even bumped without taking the fly. This is a perfect float for pontoon. Lots of long runs fishing banks, or open river. Several opportunities to stop and wade. Another nice mostly sunny day with little wind.
9/19 Best day on river. Launched at Pray Bridge about 10 Miles. 1030-1630. Excellent float. Tried streamers with no luck. Hoppers about the same as before but more actual takes. Switched to single hopper fly and that seemed to work best. Wind came up about 1500 or so, fairly steady and strong last hour so I came in early. Good day.
10/3-10/7/2009
Stayed at Paradise Valley KOA south of Livingston. Very cold and windy. Went into the park on 10/4, stayed in camp 10/5. Floated from Loch Leven FAS on 10/6. Very windy and cold. Too windy to fish. 6 ½ mile float took about 4 hours with little fishing, brief stop for lunch. Beautiful stretch of river.
